Why gastric banding?

  • No cutting open of the stomach, no staples and above all no removal of part of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Weight loss can be adjusted to suit the needs of the individual patient at any time after surgery
  • This procedure will mean a huge change to your lifestyle!

The procedure

A long-term implant – an inflatable ring of medical-grade silicone – is placed around the upper portion of your stomach, separating it into a very small part at the top and a much larger part below. The diameter of the opening between the two parts can be adjusted to ensure the patient is able to achieve the optimum weight loss without feeling any discomfort.  To adjust this opening, the doctor can tighten or loosen the band by adding or removing liquid from the system via the adjustment port, which is implanted just under the patient’s skin.It is important for patients to know that gastric  banding is reversible surgery – the stomach can be returned to its original shape at any time by surgically removing the band.

How much weight can I expect to lose after surgery?

The loss of weight is influenced by many factors´and needs to be discussed with your surgeon. The gastric band can be adjusted to suit your individual needs and requirements. Most gastric banding patients lose the majority of their excess weight within the first two years after surgery – the surgical intervention is considered to be successful, when at least 60 to 70% of excess weight is lost during this time.
